The Ryan Lee Holland Cancer Foundation, Inc. was formed in May, 2011. The foundation works in Ryan's memory to help cancer patients in active treatment who are dealing with the financial hardships created due to their cancer diagnosis and treatment. Financial assistance is provided to patients in active treatment, living in Georgia or Michigan no matter the cancer diagnosis or age, who are experiencing economic hardship due to diagnosis and treatment.
Ryan graduated from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor with a Bachelor Degree in 2009. He had plans to attend medical school and some day become a Doctor. However, Ryan was diagnosed with Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP). A hereditary colon rectal cancer syndrome in February 2010 after a colonoscopy. FAP is an inherited condition in which numerous polyps form mainly in the large intestine. At the time of his diagnosis it was determined that the FAP had advanced to colon cancer. He endured chemotherapy and radiation treatments, but the disease metastasized to his liver. After 8 months of treatment at Emory Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, Ryan and his parents traveled to MD Anderson hospital in Houston Texas every 3 weeks for treatment when his oncologist recommended an alternative treatment for his liver called Hepatic Arterial Infusion (HAI). After 4 months of HAI treatments Ryan passed away on March 1, 2011 at the age of 25. Ryan’s faith was unshaken and his courage represents the true meaning of the human will and his spirit will live on through this foundation.
When Ryan was diagnosed with colon cancer in February, 2010 we had no idea of the emotional and financial roller coaster ride we were about to encounter. Insurance co-pays, prescription co-pays and other expenses caught us by surprise. Thanks to friends and family members who stepped in to help. We were dealt another financial blow when Ryan was referred to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. A wonderful family allowed us to live with them while Ryan underwent treatment. However, we were responsible for traveling expenses to and from Houston every 3 weeks and all of the other expenses that came along with Ryan's treatments. While traveling to Houston, Texas for Ryan's treatments, we realized that so many other families are struggling to do whatever they can to get treatment to help their loved ones. Therefore, we are here to comfort those in trouble with the comfort we ourselves received from God. (2 Corinthians 1:4)
Ryan wanted to give his testimony to others about fighting cancer, by staying positive and trusting in God for a miracle. Through this foundation we will be able to give that message to others while helping them meet some of their financial Needs.
